Arsenal are tightening their grip on Atletico Madrid’s Belgian international defender Toby Alderweireld.

The Belgian joined the Spanish champions last summer from Ajax, but had a difficult first season in Spain, making only ten league starts as Los Rojiblancos won La Liga.

A number of clubs including, including the Premier League duo of West Ham and Southampton, are keeping a close eye on the defender and are ready to make a dash for his signature in the last days of the transfer window.

However, Arsenal seem to be the club that have surged ahead in the race to the sign the 25-year-old, by taking firm action.

The Gunners have already agreed personal terms with the Belgian and the club have agreed to match the player’s pay package in Spain, according to Italian outlet Tutto Mercato.

However, Arsene Wenger's Arsenal are still to agree a transfer fee with Diego Simeone's Atletico Madrid for the Belgian defender.

Los Colchoneros are believed to be open to selling the defender, but will not relent until they receive an acceptable offer for the Belgian.
