Arsenal defender Calum Chambers has replaced Everton’s John Stones for England’s 2016 European Championship qualifiers against San Marino and Estonia.

The 20-year-old injured his ankle in the dying seconds of Everton’s 2-1 loss to Manchester United at Old Trafford yesterday and he was carried off the turf on a stretcher.

Everton manager Roberto Martinez explained that Stones’ injury will be thoroughly assessed, but admits that it could be serious.

"We will have to wait for the medical department to assess it but for him to come off the pitch early it is definitely something", Martinez told the BBC.

Chambers was named in England’s Under-21 squad but Roy Hodgson confirmed last week that in case of any more withdrawals the Arsenal defender will be called up as a replacement.

"Calum would be the next one to come in but at the moment is 'loaned out' to the Under-21s", Hodgson said.

Stones made his debut for England against Peru earlier this year and started as a right-back in the Three Lions’ 2-0 win over Switzerland last month.

England will take on San Marino at Wembley on 9th October before travelling to face Estonia on 12th October.
