Former Spanish international David Villa has stressed that individual players need to be trusted regarding injuries.

Vicente del Bosque decided to leave Diego Costa out from the national team, saying that the striker needs rest even though the Spaniard played the full 90 minutes against Chelsea last weekend.

Another Chelsea player Cesc Fabregas pulled out of the Spain squad with a hamstring injury, but he also played against Liverpool with an injury niggle.

With players pulling out of international duty despite regularly playing for their club sides, questions about their commitment towards their national teams have been raised.

But the former Barcelona forward has insisted that a player rarely fakes an injury as that is the worst possible thing that can happen to a professional.

He added that the individual player and the doctors need to be trusted regarding injuries and their commitment should not be questioned.

“I can’t comment because I am not there, but players always want to play football”, Villa was quoted as saying by AS.

“From my experience, the worst thing for a player is being injured. No player has an unwillingness to play going through their head, either with the national team or their club side.

"Therefore if a player is injured, like Costa and some others, it is because they really cannot play the game. Therefore you have to trust in him, in the decision of the player, and the doctors.”

Villa is the top goalscorer for Spain with 59 strikes from 97 appearances.
