Manchester United and Arsenal have been placed on red alert with the news that Tottenham Hotspur defender Jan Vertonghen is ready to leave the club in January.

The Belgian defender arrived at White Hart Lane in the summer of 2012 from Ajax and has been crucial to Tottenham’s plans in the last two seasons.

But new manager Mauricio Pochettino is thought to not be a fan of Vertonghen and believes that he is not suited to Tottenham’s style of football under his leadership.

Vertonghen has also not taken too kindly to the fact that the Argentine has opted to rotate his defenders this season and the stopper is keen to leave the club in January, according to Belgian daily Het Laatste Nieuws.

Tottenham are believed to be willing to sell the defender next month for the right price, believed to be close to the €20m mark.

Both Arsenal and Manchester United are in the market to sign defenders and are ready to pounce on Vertonghen, who is a proven Premier League performer, in January if Tottenham indicate that they are willing to sanction the Belgian’s sale to domestic rivals.

The 27-year-old has been a crucial part of Tottenham’s defence since his arrival and has also earned 64 international caps for Belgium.
