Giannelli Imbula’s father, who also acts as his agent, was not impressed with the way Chelsea approached negotiations for his son in the summer of 2013 before the player eventually joined Marseille.

The 22-year-old French midfielder has been at Marseille since July 2013 and has been turning heads with his performances in Ligue 1.

Arsenal and Chelsea have both been linked with being interested in signing the midfielder next month, but his father has indicated that the Blues should not be optimistic about a deal for Imbula.

Willy Ndangi, the player’s father, revealed that before his son signed for Marseille he did hold talks with Chelsea, but was far from impressed with their negotiating tactics.

“But their people wanted to hang a noose around the player’s neck for five years. They wanted the deal to be a form of an ownership [of Imbula].

“The kid is willing to take up any challenge, move to Turkey or anywhere, but footballers should remain free and should have the control over their careers.”

The defensive midfielder is one of the key players for the Ligue 1 leaders and has started all their 19 league games this season.
