Former Celtic striker Chris Sutton believes that the Scottish champions have proved again this season that they are not good enough to play in Europe, after they exited the Europa League with a 2-1 defeat to Ajax at home last night.

Celtic failed to make it to the group stage of the Champions League for the second year running and while they managed to qualify for the round of 32 in the Europa League last season, the Bhoys have been knocked out of the competition in the group stage this term.

Ronny Deila is under pressure to replicate their Scottish dominance on the European stage and the Celtic boss has promised that he will learn from this season’s mistakes to drivr their recovery next term

However, Sutton is not convinced and stressed that the only thing the club have learned in Europe this season is that they are not good enough to compete on the big stage with most European sides.

The former Celtic striker said on BT Sport: “Learning curve? We are talking about getting into the Champions League and learning things in Europe.

“What we are learning is that we are not good enough for Europe, that is all what we are learning.”

Sutton is not completely blaming Deila for Celtic’s failures and feels the club hierarchy are equally responsible for the fiasco with their shoddy recruitment in the transfer market.

“The recruitment has not been good enough and I am not just blaming Ronny as the club also need to look at themselves.”
