John Collins has stated that Celtic are to deploy new signing Kristoffer Ajer as a holding midfielder.

The Norwegian wonderkid put pen to paper on a four-year-deal with the Hoops on Wednesday, with the youngster set to join the Scottish champions in June, ahead of their new campaign getting under way.

Ajer has headed back to IK Start, for whom he has thus far amassed 47 appearances in all competitions, scoring 13 times and providing five assists.

And Collins, who feels the holding midfielder’s role is Ajer’s natural position, insisted that Celtic want to play the starlet as a midfield enforcer once he returns to the club in the summer, although the 48-year was quick to add that the 17-year-old is also suited to playing as a number 10.

“Playing him as a holding midfielder? Yes, I think that is going to be his natural position”, he said at a pre-match press conference, when asked about Ajer.

Ajer, who enjoyed a successful one-week trial spell at Celtic Park last month, is yet to earn a senior cap for Norway but has represented the nation up to Under-17 level.
