Arsenal legend Robert Pires says that the club's philosophy is not to compete in the transfer market with Chelsea, Manchester City and Manchester United, while he has also backed Arsene Wenger as boss.

The Gunners continue to be unwilling to fork out big sums for players, with their most expensive signing this summer coming in at around £35m – small change compared to Manchester United breaking the world transfer record by paying £89m for Paul Pogba.

Chelsea and Manchester City have also splashed the cash this summer as they look to make an impact in the Premier League.

But former Arsenal star Pires feels that the club's philosophy is not to spend as heavily as their rivals and they are sticking to it.

"I believe in this team, this squad, and of course in Arsene Wenger", he told reporters after an Arsenal legend's game.

"I know a lot of fans are critical about Arsene, but this is our philosophy not to spend a lot of money like Man United, City or Chelsea.

"I think the quality is there – this is my opinion – and when you see the names at Arsenal, the quality is unbelievable."

Arsenal have not won the Premier League for over a decade, while they have also not threatened to win the Champions League for ten years.

However, Wenger has strengthened his squad this summer and hopes are high amongst the Arsenal faithful that the makings of a title challenge lie within the side the Frenchman is forming.

Arsenal have picked up four points from their opening three Premier League games and are next in action after the international break when they host Southampton at the Emirates Stadium,
