Celtic legend Tom Boyd thinks Leigh Griffiths was not trying to be “cocky” when he tried to chip Matt Gilks during Celtic’s 1-0 win over Rangers on Sunday.

Despite Celtic being the more dominant team in the Scottish League Cup semi-final contest at Hampden, the Hoops had to wait until the 87th minute to break the deadlock due to Rangers custodian Gilks' heroics between the sticks.

After Moussa Dembele scored three minutes from time, Celtic soon had a great opportunity to double their lead when Griffiths found himself one-on-one with Gilks.

However, the striker’s chipped effort was easily saved by the Gers goalkeeper as Dembele’s strike turned out to be the winner in the Old Firm derby.

And Boyd feels Griffiths was right to attempt the chip over Gilks, who was splendid dealing with low balls throughout the course of the game.

“Some are saying he was trying to be cocky, he was not being cocky”, Boyd said on Celtic TV.

“Gilks saved everything which was down and low all day all game, and I think as he was getting down again, Griffiths was just trying to lift it over him.

“But unfortunately the goalkeeper read the situation and didn’t get down.”

Griffiths, who provided the assist for Dembele’s goal, has scored eight times in 15 appearances in all competitions this season.
