Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger believes that scoring an equaliser before half time was good for the morale of his side in their 3-1 win over Stoke City at the Emirates Stadium.

The home side conceded the first goal when Granit Xhaka fouled Joe Allen inside the box to give away a penalty, which Charlie Adam duly converted to give Stoke the lead.

However, just before half-time Theo Walcott scored the equaliser and Mesut Ozil and Alex Iwobi scored two more in the second half to seal the win for the north Londoners.

Wenger admits that his side took some time to get into their flow, but feels the Gunners were unlucky to concede the penalty, which he believes was not even a foul from Xhaka.

However, he believes the goal before half-time helped his side’s mentality going into the break, which proved crucial in the second half as they attacked to get the win.

The Frenchman told the BBC: “We have scored many goals this week and had an excellent run, so let’s keep the focus and keep it going on.

“We had a hesitant start, but when you play every few days sometimes it takes you time to get into a rhythm and today that is what happened.

“We got a very unlucky penalty against us because it is not even a foul in my opinion.

"But we have showed great mental strength.

“Everybody was amazed [by the penalty] and I haven’t seen it yet but it was of course a blow for us.

"Mentally it was good for morale to get back to 1-1 before half time."

The Gunners will next travel to Merseyside to take on Everton at Goodison Park on Tuesday night.
