Former Liverpool star Jason McAteer thinks that Mesut Ozil is only on the way out at Arsenal.

The ex-Germany international missed Arsenal's 5-1 defeat at Anfield on Saturday due to a knee injury, with eyebrows again raised at him missing another big game.

It has been claimed in some quarters that Ozil does not suit the game of Arsenal boss Unai Emery and McAteer thinks the German will be becoming sick at the situation.

As such, for the former Liverpool midfielder, Ozil is on the way out of the Emirates.

He said on LFC TV after watching Liverpool tear Arsenal to pieces and win 5-1 at Anfield: "Long term, I think Ozil will go.

"He will get sick of how he's being treated and want better, and want to play more often.

"He will want to go somewhere where he's loved.

"He is someone who needs an arm round him", McAteer added.

Ozil has missed key Arsenal games against Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United, in addition to being absent for the defeat at Liverpool.

The 30-year-old is locked down on a lucrative contract at Arsenal which runs until the summer of 2021.

Without Ozil, Arsenal struggled to land a blow on Liverpool and after taking the lead at Anfield were blown away, being 4-1 down by half-time and eventually conceding five as Roberto Firmino grabbed a hat-trick for the league leaders.
