Ronald Koeman wanted to sign the Dutchman last year, but Barcelona did not have the funds to pursue his signature for a transfer fee.

Barcelona continued to keep tabs on the midfielder and were expected to snap him on a free transfer when his contract at Liverpool expired in the summer.

Koeman is an admirer of the midfielder, but it seems priorities have shifted at Barcelona since the arrival of new president Joan Laporta.

According to Catalan daily Sport, Barcelona’s interest in Wijnaldum has cooled.

Wijnaldum is likely to demand a big contract if he was to move and their financial strains mean the club are keen to cut their cloth accordingly.

The emergence of young midfielder Ilaix Moriba has also moved Barcelona’s priorities away from a player of the Liverpool midfielder’s profile.

Wijnaldum is aware the Barcelona might not want to sign him and it has been claimed that he is now considering signing a new contract.

He recently claimed that he would be devastated if he has to leave Liverpool in the summer and it is suggested that Wijnaldum penning a fresh contract is the most likely outcome in the saga.
