Steve Bruce wants to sign a defender in the summer transfer window but the club could see three of them leave St James’ Park at the end of the season.

Frederico Fernandez, Schar and Dummett are all out of contract in the summer and there is uncertainty over their futures at Newcastle.

Fernandez’s contract contains no unilateral option to extend for Newcastle but the club do have the options on Schar and Dummett.

However, they have yet to trigger those options and the defenders are unsure of their future.

The club are facing an uncertain summer and Steve Bruce is yet to find out how much money he could have in his transfer kitty.

Newcastle may want to wait until the end of the season before taking a decision on Schar and Dummett.

Dummett is desperate to stay at his boyhood club and is due a pay rise if Newcastle take up the option.

But the defender is prepared to sign a longer contract on his current terms in order to secure his future at the club.
