Bergwijn endured a difficult 2020/21 season, struggling to earn regular playing time at Tottenham and missing out on a place in the Netherlands’ squad for the European Championship.
The 23-year-old, though, has made a strong start to the new campaign, starting in each of Spurs’ three league games so far and earning a call-up to the Dutch national team.
Reflecting on last season’s disappointments, Bergwijn explained that he is looking to move forward and insisted that he is feeling a lot of confidence at both club level and with the national team.
Bergwijn is of the view that the coach plays a role in his confidence and pointed out how new Tottenham boss Nuno gives him the freedom to express himself.
“Of course [not being selected for the European Championship was disappointing], but you have to move forward“, Bergwijn told Dutch broadcaster NOS.
“A year ago I didn’t play much at Tottenham Hotspur either, but I learned from last season.
“I also think it depends a bit on who your coach is.
“At Tottenham, I now have a coach who just lets me do my thing and play freely.
“I am such a player, but of course, you still have to show it.
“Now, I just get a lot of confidence [not only] at Tottenham, but also here with the Dutch national team.“
Having made a good start to the 2021/22 campaign, Bergwijn will be looking to establish himself as a regular starter for Spurs and earn a place in the Netherlands’ squad for the World Cup.
