The fortunes of Newcastle United were changed as big-money ownership came to Tyneside earlier this week and already talk has turned to high profile transfers.

However, there is still the matter of the ongoing Premier League season, with Newcastle in the drop zone after seven matches, still winless in the league.

Clark thinks that both the fans and the squad are aware that separated from the off-the-field matters they have a relegation battle on their hands.

The Toon legend however, feels that they have a chance to make a fantastic start to a new era at St. James’ Park as they can grab the full three points against an out-of-sorts Tottenham Hotspur team.

“I think the good thing is that there is realism still for the fans – they know we’re in a relegation battle”, Clark wrote in his Chronicle Live column.

“The players too know it but they are now playing for their future and to be a part of things moving forward into an unbelievable new era.”

“They have a chance to be in the dressing room with top class players.

“I believe all players want to be alongside the best available.

“It makes you a better player and everybody can get a lift.

“Against Spurs, they have a chance to start with a win.

“This isn’t one of the great Spurs teams and their talisman Harry Kane has not hit his usual heights and high standards.”

The weekend’s game will be manager Steve Bruce’s 1,000th game in management, which will provide even more motivation for the Magpies to celebrate the occasion with a win.
