Bissouma was a big target Villa for the winter transfer window as Steven Gerrard was keen to bring in a defensive midfielder.

But the Villans did not move ahead with a move to sign the player due to the costs involved.

Aston Villa discussed numbers with Brighton and the player’s representatives but they were too high for them.

The Midlands club were particularly concerned about the add-ons Brighton demanded as part of any potential agreement.

Villa were also worried about the agent fees that would have been involved in any deal to sign Bissouma this month.

While Aston Villa are unlikely to bring in the defensive midfielder they wanted, Gerrard is content with the work the club have carried out in the ongoing window.

The Villans will resume their pursuit of Bissouma in the summer but they are likely to face competition from several other clubs.

Arsenal are expected to try and sign the Brighton star at the end of the season to solve their midfield issues.
