Bentancur was a big target for Aston Villa going into the final week of the transfer window but they never managed to agree on a fee with Juventus.

Tottenham came in late into the negotiations as Antonio Conte insisted on signing a midfielder for his Spurs squad this month.

Fabio Paratici leveraged his connection with his former employers Juventus and worked out an agreement over a fee.

Spurs have agreed to pay an initial fee of €19m and another €6m in add-ons and, according to Italian outlet Calciomercato.it, Bentancur is now a Tottenham player.

The north London club put the midfielder through a medical in Argentina where he is stationed with the Uruguay squad.

Bentancur has also signed a contract with Tottenham and will now travel to England once he is done with international duty.

The midfielder will join training with his new team-mates when he arrives and will then look to make his debut.

Spurs are also close to signing Bentancur’s former Juventus teammate Dejan Kulusevski who will undergo a medical at Tottenham today.
