The Ligue 1 club captured Shaqiri from Liverpool in last summer’s transfer window, agreeing a deal worth an initial €6m plus €5m in bonus payments.

He is now being sold by Lyon to MLS club Chicago Fire and, according to French sports daily L’Equipe, the Ligue 1 outfit will make a profit.

Chicago Fire are to pay just under €7m for Shaqiri and the winger has not triggered any of the bonus payments which would have been due to Liverpool, meaning Lyon will make a profit.

Shaqiri communicated to Lyon when the January transfer window opened that he wanted to move on and the club were happy to grant his request.

A source at Lyon said: “He, like his brother [who is his agent] has had exemplary behaviour since his arrival, despite complicated periods.

“He is a very good player, but it was a recruitment error on his profile since he could not play on the right.”

Shaqiri is looking to make sure he plays regularly and returns to form as he eyes the forthcoming 2022 World Cup in Qatar which Switzerland have qualified for.
