Manchester United are set to host Atletico Madrid tonight in the second leg of their Champions League last 16 tie.

A 1-1 draw in Spain means Manchester United are banking on the home crowd to back them in full voice as they look to see off the challenge of the Spanish champions and reach the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

Old Trafford is one of the most iconic grounds of European football, despite complaints of the stadium becoming more archaic and not fit for purpose for a modern big football club.

But Lopez stressed that Old Trafford can really put the pressure on opposition players and has the ability to impose itself with its atmosphere.

He claimed that the noise can be even more intimidating than Anfield when the Old Trafford faithful are in full voice.

Lopez told Spanish daily AS: “When it roars, it does a lot.

“It’s amazing.

“It’s one of the stadiums that can impose itself on you, even more than Anfield.

“There are twice as many people.

“At least 80,000 people who, when they shout, just sneak up on you.”

Manchester United are considering plans for the redevelopment of Old Trafford, which includes a proposal to tear down the stadium and build a new one in its place.
