Ten Hag has agreed in principle to become the next Manchester United manager at the end of the season, with the Red Devils yet to work out an agreement with Ajax.

The Dutchman is expected to sign a four-year contract but no announcement is expected to be made before Sunday’s Dutch Cup final between Ajax and PSV Eindhoven.

Steele, who was the goalkeeping coach at Manchester United under Sir Alex Ferguson, observed Ten Hag’s training sessions at Utrecht.

He stressed that his attention to detail and the thorough nature of the sessions can be compared to Guardiola and the way the Spaniard makes his players work behind the scenes.

“He was very thorough, unbelievable detail — like Pep Guardiola”, Steele told The Athletic.

“‘When we lose the ball in this area this is what we do’. ‘This is how to win the ball in this situation’. Specific moments in games mapped out.

“He was also coaching his players when to go for the jugular and when to retain possession.

“I liked his manner.”

There are still question marks over Ten Hag’s English, but Steele insisted that there is no problem there as he easily understood his thick Geordie accent when the two met in 2017.

“He is very articulate.

“If he can understand my Geordie, there is no problem with his English.”

Ten Hag will be tasked with quickly reviving a Manchester United side that have not won the league title since 2013.
