Targett joined Newcastle on loan from Aston Villa in the January transfer window and he has featured ten times for the Magpies since moving to St. James’ Park.

With Steven Gerrard invested in Lucas Digne at Aston Villa, Targett could struggle to play at Villa Park and he is keen on staying at Newcastle beyond the end of the season.

There are suggestions that Newcastle could try to sign him on a permanent deal in the summer but Howe indicated that no such decision is yet to be made.

The Newcastle boss wants to wait until the end of the season but insisted that he is pleased with the way Targett has seamlessly fitted into the squad and his performances have been solid.

Asked about Targett’s future, Howe said in a press conference: “Matt’s done very well.

“There are still games to play this season and opinions to be fully formed, but he’s performed very well.

“He’s fitted into the team and group very well.

“He’s been very consistent…we’re very pleased with him.”

The 26-year-old still has more than three years left on his contract to run and Villa are likely to ask for a considerable fee in the summer if Newcastle want to sign him.
