Manchester United are looking for a huge rebuild ahead of next season, and have been on the hunt for a new permanent manager to take over from interim boss Ralf Rangnick.

The Premier League giants confirmed today that current Ajax manager Ten Hag will take over the permanent reins at Old Trafford in the summer.

Ten Hag’s assistant Mitchell van der Gaag will also join him at Manchester United and the Dutchman is still finalising his backroom staff.

But according to Dutch daily De Telegraaf, McClaren is unlikely to be part of the backroom staff at Old Trafford under the 52-year-old.

Ten Hag worked under the former England manager at FC Twente and had talks with him before accepting the Manchester United job.

There was speculation that the 60-year-old could join his staff but that is not expected to happen.

Manchester United are yet to contact him and it seems unlikely that the club are keen to have him back.

McClaren served as assistant to Sir Alex Ferguson and won a treble and two more league titles during his time at Old Trafford.
