Manchester United announced the appointment of Ten Hag before the end of last season and he immediately got to work after the campaign ended.

Ten Hag and his Manchester United squad will start pre-season at the end of this month and the Dutchman is hopeful some of the new signings will be in the building by then.

Manchester United have been accused of not having a clear plan since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013 but Fortune feels the Dutchman’s appointment shows a broad alignment of vision.

He also believes that a number of players leaving the club this summer also gives the new manager a clean slate to work with and he stressed the importance of Ten Hag restoring the culture of the club once he starts work over the next month.

“With the announcement of Erik, I see a broad alignment in the club and a bit more of a clear vision”, Fortune told The Athletic.

“It feels exciting because things are more clear in the direction the club wants to go.

“Some players are leaving at the end of their contracts but I find that exciting for the new manager — fresh start, clean sheet, new style of play… but also understanding Manchester United’s style of forward-thinking, attacking football.

“The most important thing — I am sure he will get it — is to restore the culture, the unity, that relationship between staff, players, togetherness… that feeling with the fans and creating a positive environment.”

Ten Hag has been working with football director John Murtough to identify new signings and strengthen the squad appropriately this summer.
