The 30-year-old towering centre-back joined Newcastle last season in the January transfer window and helped Howe’s side achieve an eleventh place finish.

Burn has been a consistent presence in Newcastle’s backline this season and Howe has used the versatile player as a left-back on the majority of occasions.

Howe believes the 30-year-old adds personality and leadership to the Magpies’ dressing room and stressed that he has done very well this season.

The Newcastle manager believes that the competition between Matt Targett and Burn for the team’s left-back slot will be exciting, and he noted that both players have greatly improved the Magpies’ defence this season.

Howe also admitted that one of the reasons for signing Burn was his versatility and pointed out that his height was an added bonus.

“I think Dan has done exceptionally well”, Howe told Chronicle Live.

“He adds so much in terms of his personality and his leadership.

“His height is an added bonus in that position.

“Matt is an outstanding player in his own right.

“It will be good to see that battle.

“But Dan can play in different positions too, that versatility is one of the reasons we signed him.

“I think for me it’s about contributing the strengths you have to that and to the back four.

“Our defensive unit has been excellent this season and both players have played a big part in that.”

Burn has made 17 appearances for Newcastle United this season and has managed to help the Tyneside outfit keep eight clean sheets.
