Ange Postecoglou admits that Dane Scarlett’s loan to Ipswich Town did not work out and revealed the striker will stay at Tottenham Hotspur for the remainder of the campaign.

The 19-year-old striker joined Ipswich on loan last summer but failed to carve out a niche for himself in Kieran McKenna’s high-flying squad.

He made just 12 substitute appearances in the Championship and failed to hit the back of the net for the Blues even once before his loan was cut short by Tottenham.

Postecoglou admitted that it made sense to recall Scarlett as the loan just did not work out for him and he was not getting what he needed at Ipswich.

He stressed that it is now up to the forward to show what he is worth in training with the rest of the Spurs first-team squad.

The Spurs boss also squashed any talk of the forward being loaned out again in January by insisting that Scarlett will stay at Tottenham for the rest of the season.

Postecoglou said in a press conference when asked about the plan for Scarlett: “There are a lot of moving parts you’re talking about there, mate.

“Good to get Dane back and obviously the loan didn’t work out for him at Ipswich, which is disappointing for him and disappointing for us because the reason we sent him out on loan was to get some game-time, rhythm and develop.

“It hasn’t worked out that way so made sense to bring him back.

“He is back training with us and becomes available from January 1st again. Then it is up to him.

“He will stay with us until the rest of the season and we’ll see how he trains and what opportunities may or may not come along, so we’ll address those situations then.”

It remains to be seen whether Scarlett manages to catch the eye of Postecoglou and gets first-team opportunities at Spurs.
