Former Rangers star Gordon Dalziel believes the big clash against Celtic swallowed Gers striker Cyriel Dessers up.

Dessers was picked to lead the line by Philippe Clement in the crucial derby clash, but failed to make an impact and was guilty of not taking those opportunities which did come his way.

The striker has struggled to justify his billing since arriving at Ibrox and his display at Celtic Park is unlikely to help him win over the doubters.

Clement brought Abdallah Sima off with 20 minutes left of the game – Dessers completed the full 90 minutes – and Dalziel admits he would have brought Dessers off instead of Sima.

The former Rangers attacker believes that the game at Celtic Park swallowed the striker up and he offered nothing.

“I think if Sima was OK then I would have taken a gamble putting Sima through the middle and taking Dessers off, giving me a different option”, Dalziel said during the closing stages on Clyde 1’s Superscoreboard.

“It’s a lonely job up there for Dessers, but he’s offered nothing. Sometimes I think we’re very hard on him because in recent weeks he’s been getting goals and looking lively.

“But this game has swallowed him up a little bit.”

Dessers has been written off by a number of Rangers fans, who doubt he has what it takes to lead the line, but the striker will still be bidding to convince Clement he has a long term future at Ibrox.
