Derby County are working on the wage split with Sheffield Wednesday to sign striker Michael Smith on loan, according to journalist Alan Nixon.

Rams boss Paul Warne has an interest in signing Smith, a proven goal-getter at League One level.

Sheffield Wednesday were waiting to strengthen before allowing him to leave and have now done so, leading to suggestions they will green light an exit.

A move to Derby appears to be firmly in the works for the experienced striker and the Rams have been working on the percentage of wages they would shoulder.

If an agreement can be found with Wednesday then Derby will be able to snap Smith up.

Smith was not in Sheffield Wednesday’s matchday squad for their 2-1 loss at home against Coventry City on Saturday.

The striker last turned out in the Championship for the Owls on New Year’s Day against Hull City.

Smith has found the back of the net 75 times at League One level.
