Chris Sutton has urged Celtic to hold on to Matt O’Riley until the end of the season amidst interest from Spanish giants Atletico Madrid.

The 23-year-old midfielder’s future at Celtic Park has come under the scanner with a week left in the ongoing winter transfer window.

Atletico Madrid are pushing to take him to the Wanda Metropolitano and have tabled a bid that would see him join them on loan with the Spanish giants having an obligation to buy.

Celtic have a decision to make on a player who has been pivotal for the club this season and Sutton stressed that the club cannot consider selling the midfielder in January.

He admitted that O’Riley could likely leave in the summer but insisted that Celtic must prioritise winning the Scottish Premiership this season, which means holding on to one of their best players.

The former Bhoy took to X and wrote: “Celtic can’t even consider selling now.

“O’Riley may end up going in the summer as we know the Celtic model but there’s a title to be won and that’s the priority right now.”

It remains to be seen whether O’Riley agitates for a move given the pedigree of Atletico Madrid in European football.
