Barnsley are rivalling Blackpool in their pursuit of Sheffield Wednesday midfielder George Byers, but the Tangerines are the current favourites, according to The Star.

The 27-year-old midfielder is expected to leave Hillsborough before the transfer window closes tonight.

Wednesday are open to letting him go as he is not a major part of their plans and he has suitors in League One.

Blackpool are pushing to sign Byers on a loan deal from Wednesday but there is more competition for his signature as well.

It has been claimed that Barnsley are also interested in getting their hands on the Sheffield Wednesday midfielder on deadline day.

The Tykes are keen on signing him on a permanent deal instead of the loan proposal Blackpool are offering.

However, Blackpool have an edge in the race to sign him and Byers is more likely to join them on loan by the end of the window tonight.

The midfielder has been at Wednesday since 2021 when he joined from Swansea and has 78 appearances for the Owls.
