Mark Wilson has insisted that the Celtic board must clarify to the fans the club’s goals rather than make them hope at the start of every transfer window.
Celtic fans have been left fuming after an underwhelming winter transfer window and the 1-1 draw against Aberdeen on Saturday has further dampened the mood.
Rangers are now just three points behind Celtic in the title race with a game in hand and Bhoys fans are now worried about not even winning the league title this season.
Wilson admitted that it is natural for fans to expect the club to reinvest the money lying in their accounts unless Celtic have decided to become a project club that only develop players.
He stressed that the Celtic board should come clean about the club’s ambition to the fans rather than allow them to hope for some progress at the start of every transfer window.
The former Celtic star said on Clyde 1’s Superscoreboard: “When Celtic publish the figures and they see a large pot of money, the fans automatically assume that money is going to be reinvested into the squad to give them a realistic opportunity of taking the team forward.
“Not just standing still, not just developing players but taking the team forward both domestically and in Europe.
“No doubt about it that over the previous two transfer windows that’s a long way away from what any Celtic fans want.
“What’s the model now? Is it just a project club? Is that the be-all and end-all because if that’s what it is just say that to the Celtic fans.
“Never mind the £70m in the bank and the club are going to be stable forever but this is the route we are going down.
“But it’s an illusion that Celtic fans are under and believe at the start of the window that this is the one where we get a player from the Premier League and it just never happens.”
Celtic are out of Europe but can still finish the season with trophies by winning the league and the Scottish Cup.
