Tottenham Hotspur defender Djed Spence is confident that Genoa coach Alberto Gilardino will push him to raise his quality during his loan stint.

The 23-year-old right-back spent the first half of the season with Leeds United on loan, but in January, the Whites decided to terminate his deal to send him back to Tottenham.

Spurs quickly arranged a deal with Genoa to send him on loan for the rest of the season and Spence has started the last three games for the Italian outfit.

Spence revealed that Serie A is more tactical than the Premier League and believes the loan spell with Genoa is a good opportunity for him to learn.

The Tottenham star also added that he is aware of Gilardino’s reputation and feels that the Italian tactician will push him to become a better player.

“In the Premier League football is faster, the pace is higher but here you have more tactics, you have to use your head”, Spence told Italian daily Gazzetta dello Sport (via Calciomercato.com).

“Serie A is a great opportunity for me.

“I knew Gilardino by reputation, because of his past as a player: with him the start was very good.

“And I am convinced that he will push me to make the leap in quality.”

Tottenham have negotiated an option-to-buy clause in Spence’s loan deal and now it remains to be seen whether Genoa will trigger it at the end of the season.
