Former Bundesliga striker Jan Aage Fjortoft believes that although Liverpool linked Xabi Alonso has a gentlemen’s agreement with Bayer Leverkusen, it does not apply to Bayern Munich.

Alonso is increasingly emerging as the front runner to take over at Liverpool after Jurgen Klopp leaves in the summer.

The former Liverpool midfielder has impressed with his work at Leverkusen and has the BayArena side competing for the Bundesliga title.

However, Bayern Munich are also claimed to be keen on appointing Alonso on the back of his good work at Leverkusen.

Fjortoft, a former Bundesliga striker, is clear that Alonso has a gentlemen’s agreement with Leverkusen that they would let him leave for a bigger club.

Crucially though he says it does not apply to Bayern Munich.

“Apparently Alonso has a gentlemen’s agreement with Leverkusen”, Fjortoft wrote on X.

“Can leave for a bigger club.

“I don’t think that includes Bayern.

“Yes! Generally the Bundesliga-clubs are generous letting players and coaches go to Bayern.

“But I guess there must be a limit somewhere…”

Alonso is also claimed to be leaning towards Liverpool over Bayern Munich and the stars could be aligning for the Spaniard to go to Anfield.
