Former Bundesliga striker Jan Aage Fjortoft has insisted that there have not been in any discussions between Liverpool managerial target Xabi Alonso and Bayern Munich.

Alonso’s Leverkusen team moved ten points clear at the top of the Bundesliga table over the weekend but the headlines are still about the Spaniard’s potential departure at the end of the season.

He is the number one target for Liverpool to replace Jurgen Klopp and Bayern Munich are also pushing to take him to the Allianz Arena in the summer.

The German champions and the Reds have established contact with Alonso’s camp but there are claims that Bayern Munich have held deep discussions over the Spaniard moving to Bavaria.

However, Fjortoft claimed that no such discussions have taken place and Alonso is still very much focused on Leverkusen’s season.

He reiterated his previous words and stressed that staying at Leverkusen is still likely to be the former midfielder’s preferred option in the summer.

Fjortoft took to X and wrote: “I have been told: no discussions between Bayern and Alonso, no decision made by Alonso.

“Alonso fully concentrated on the end of the season

“I stand with my most – likely -list: 1. Leverkusen 2. Liverpool 3. Bayern Munich.”

Leverkusen have continued to remain calm and are reasonably confident that Alonso will stay to lead them into next season.
