West Ham could be ready to rival Newcastle United for the signature of Valenciennes defender Gaetan Bong.

According to Mercato 365, the Hammers are sending talent spotters to take in Bong’s performance for Daniel Sanchez’s men in Ligue 1 later today, when they meet Nice.

The Cameroon international is attracting real attention during the current transfer window, although snapping up the 24-year-old from Valenciennes will prove tricky.

Newcastle have already made a bid for Bong, but Valenciennes president Jean-Raymond Legrand has insisted that he will not sell the defender this month if he cannot adequately replace him.

Indeed, Legrand is determined not to derail what is looking an impressive season for Valenciennes.

West Ham though could made Legrand think again with a suitably large offer, while Newcastle could also improve their bid.

Bong, a left-back by trade, has a contract running until 2014 with Valenciennes.
