Romelu Lukaku and Christian Benteke had little-to-no impact for Belgium together, according to coach Marc Wilmots, despite their soaring individual displays in England.

The statement will come as a surprise for Premier League enthusiasts who have seen the duo do remarkably well for their respective clubs in Everton and Aston Villa.

However, second-half entrant Lukaku and starter Benteke spent just over 15 minutes together on the pitch as Belgium were beaten 2-0 by Colombia in a friendly last night.

Benteke was taken off on 75 minutes after what Wilmots later explained was a failed experiment.

The duo have a total of nine Premier League goals between them, but Wilmots told Het Nieuwsblad: "I wanted to try [the pairing], but I soon saw that nothing was going to happen.

"I am glad that you [media] could see that. That is why I took Benteke off."

Colombia ran out winners thanks to Radamel Falcao and Victor Ibarbo's second-half goals, with Belgian starlet Kevin De Bruyne having an off-night.

De Bruyne has had his criticism from his Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho in recent months, but failed to impress much even with the Portuguese in the stands.

"It makes sense that De Bruyne wants to show [Mourinho]", Wilmots added. "It's just a lack of match rhythm. Without that rhythm, it is difficult."
