Newcastle manager Alan Pardew believes that Joe Kinnear "did a lot of good work" at the club, after the former Wimbledon boss departed as the club's director of football.

The Magpies had a turbulent winter transfer window and lost midfielder Yohan Cabaye to Paris Saint-Germain, a big blow to their hopes of qualifying for Europe.

Kinnear's resignation was greeted with delight by some Newcastle fans, who feel he did not succeed in his remit.

But Pardew believes that the 67-year-old did much good during his seven-month spell in the post.

"I'm just sad to see anybody lose their job, as Joe has", Pardew was quoted as saying by the BBC.

"He did a lot of good work here."

However, Pardew is not letting Kinnear's departure affect playing matters and has his focus squarely on the Magpies' match against Chelsea this coming weekend.

"But that decision was the board's decision and we have to now work towards getting us and our position in the league more secure.

"My job is actually the next game and that's what I'm focusing on."
