Everton defender John Stones has credited the whole team for the performance they displayed en-route to beating Newcastle United 3-0 at St. James’ Park last night.

Everton last won an away league game in December and last night’s win over the Geordies ended a dreadful run of results away from home. In the pre-match press conference Toffees manager Roberto Martinez had stressed the importance of winning games away from home and his team responded to the manager’s challenge.

According to Stones’, last night’s result was a complete team performance.

“I’ve got to give a lot of credit to the boys in front of me and Sylvain [Distin]”, he told the club website.

He further added: “They did a fantastic job today and a lot of credit goes to them.”

It was also Everton’s first clean sheet in four games, and as a part of the back four Stones is pleased, but has given credit to the attacking players for their guile and clinical nature.

“We were very clinical in the final third and me, Sylvain, Bainesy [Leighton Baines] and Seamus [Coleman] had to do our job at the back. It was a very satisfying win.”

Stones had special praise for the brilliant solo goal that Ross Barkley scored, the quality of which didn’t surprise him.

“I cleared it and then Ross just set off. I was thinking he is going all the way here. I was saying ‘shoot now’ as he went across the box but what a goal.

“That’s a daily thing for Ross – he will do things out of the ordinary.”

Everton next face Fulham at Craven Cottage on Sunday 30th March.
