Former Real Madrid president Ramon Calderon has claimed that Jose Mourinho couldn’t cope with the pressure of managing Los Blancos, which ultimately led to his departure from the club.

Mourinho was appointed at the helm of Real Madrid at the start of the 2010/11 season and stayed at the club until his departure for Chelsea in the summer of 2013.

During his three years at the reigning European champions, Mourinho won La Liga in the 2011/12 season and the Spanish Cup in his inaugural season at the Santiago Bernabeu. The Portuguese failed to win a much coveted tenth European Cup for the Spanish giants, something Carlo Ancelotti did last term.

Calderon feels that Mourinho crumbled under the intense spotlight that comes with being the manager of Los Blancos and it ultimately led to his departure after three years.

“To be a manager of Real Madrid is really, really difficult, see what happened to Mourinho”, Calderon told the BBC.

“He is someone who is used to coping with pressure and he couldn't.”

During his time in Madrid, Mourinho had well publicised differences with several first team regulars including Iker Casillas, Sergio Ramos and Mesut Ozil among others. The Portuguese’s disagreements with the club captain led to his banishment from the team in favour of Antonio Adan and later Diego Lopez.

Calderon, who was president of Real Madrid from 2006 until 2009, added that Mourinho’s confrontations left the club in disarray.

“When Mourinho left, things were in a really bad situation.

“He had to leave the club after three years of a lot of problems, a lot of confrontations.”
