Jose Mourinho has agreed a deal in principle with Manchester United to replace Louis van Gaal as their manager, according to Italian outlet Tutto Mercato.

While Mourinho has struggled to lift Chelsea from their recent malaise, his reputation as a manager remains intact and he has continued to be linked with some of the top clubs in the game, such as Paris Saint-Germain, despite recent results.

The Chelsea boss retains the faith of the normally trigger happy owner Roman Abramovich, but it has been claimed that the Portuguese has already determined the course of his future.

It has been claimed that Mourinho has a deal in place with Manchester United and he is expected to replace Van Gaal as their manager. However, it is not clear whether the change will happen, next summer or at the end of the 2016/17 season, when the Dutchman’s contract expires.

Former Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed that Mourinho was one of the candidates in contention to replace him at the end of 2013/14 campaign, but the Portuguese moved to Chelsea instead.

The 52-year-old also shares a close friendship with Van Gaal and it remains to be seen whether the rumours of him moving to replace the Dutchman finally become a reality in the near future.

While Chelsea have backed their manager, there is speculation that they have sounded out Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone, who is currently unwilling to leave Spain.

It has been suggested that he will consider his future at the Vicente Calderon towards the latter months of this season.
