Dutch international Georginio Wijnaldum has insisted that he has no regrets over joining Newcastle United last summer.

After leading the PSV Eindhoven team to a league title last season, the Dutchman decided to join Newcastle for a transfer fee of €20m, but things have not gone according to plan for Wijnaldum on Tyneside.

While the midfielder has managed to maintain his consistency for the Magpies with nine goals and four assists in 30 league appearances, Newcastle’s season has plunged to new depths, and the club are currently languishing in 19th in the Premier League table.

Despite the recent appointment of Rafael Benitez, there is a real possibility that the club could be playing in the Championship next season, but Wijnaldum insisted that he knew what he was getting into when he joined Newcastle last summer.

Wijnaldum told RTV Rijnmond: “I knew it could be difficult because last season they had a difficult year.

With eight league games left, Newcastle will be hoping that the Dutchman inspires them to Premier League safety this season, as they look to give themselves one final push towards the end of the campaign.
