Rafael Benitez has urged his Newcastle United side to start winning after they slipped to a damaging 3-2 defeat away to relegation rivals Norwich City today.

Norwich were buzzing from the start at Carrow Road, making their intentions clear, and Newcastle quickly found themselves on the ropes and digging in to keep the Canaries at bay.

But Newcastle could not keep Norwich at bay until half time and in first half stoppage time Timm Klose got onto the end of a ball from Robbie Brady to head into the back of the net.

Newcastle brought Ayoze Perez off the bench as they looked for a way back into the match and did get back into it when another substitute, Aleksandar Mitrovic, headed in from an Andros Townsend cross in the 67th minute.

Parity did not last long however as Dieumerci Mbokani unleashed an unstoppable shot which rippled the back of the net.

But Newcastle were awarded a penalty when Gary O'Neil handled in the box, allowing Mitrovic to step up and make it 2-2.

There was a further twist though when in injury time Martin Olsson hit a shot which found its way into the net, making it 3-2 to Norwich.

Newcastle are now six points from Norwich, who sit just outside the relegation spots and Benitez knows with only seven games to play the Magpies desperately need points.

"The reaction of the team in the second half is a positive we can take. But it is not enough if we want to stay up", he told Sky Sports.

"Every week you will see something a little bit better but we have to start winning."
