The Magpies are set to travel to the south coast to take on the Saints at St. Mary’s on Friday night in their upcoming Premier League game.

Newcastle are currently 11th in the league table and a win against Southampton would see them leapfrog their hosts in the top flight standings.

And Darlow is of the view that leaving St. Mary’s with all three points in the bag would be a massive momentum boost to his team going into the international break.

Newcastle have already put up 11 points from seven Premier League outings, and Darlow is confident that his team can build upon their strong start to the league campaign if they manage to get a positive result away from home in Friday night’s showdown.

Asked whether the possibility of being able to break into the top five with a win over Southampton acts as a big incentive for his team, Darlow told NUFC TV: “Of course yes and I think not only that.

“To build on the start that we had, I think, I read the other day that it is the best start we have had in the last nine or so years.

“So, I think having that basis to build off and go out and give another good performance like the last couple of weeks would be something momentum wise to take us through into the international break and look to build on it again when we are back.”

Southampton are just three points behind leaders Liverpool in fifth and are going into the game with a 4-3 win over Aston Villa, while Newcastle registered a 2-1 win against Everton in their last league outing.
