The right-back scored a brace in Rangers’ 8-0 thumping of Hamilton Academical on Sunday, taking his goalscoring tally across all competitions to 12.

Tavernier has also provided nine assists in all competitions this season, while helping the Light Blues keep 16 clean sheets from 20 games.

Ex-Rangers star McCann feels Tavernier’s attacking numbers are an added feather in his cap, considering that he is also part of the side’s solid defence.

The former winger labelled Tavernier’s attacking statistics a joke and lauded the Gers captain for his bravery and willingness to go forward.

I just don’t get surprised [about full-backs being so high up] anymore now, with Tavernier in particular“, McCann said on Rangers TV.

But we have seen [Calvin] Bassey getting in there, [Borna] Barisic [as well].

I’m sure the last goal that we scored at Hamilton’s ground, both full-backs were in the penalty area.

So it is a real feather in their cap that.

You can tell a full-back to be brave and go high and get into the box but if he is not willing to do that, it is wasted.

But he [Tavernier] is prepared to do it, his numbers are a joke.

They are embarrassing someone who used to play in the forward position, how many goals he is scoring.

Having scored 12 goals from 20 games, Tavernier is currently Rangers’ top scorer, while he is also the joint top scorer in the Scottish Premiership with eight goals.
