Tavernier has scored 16 goals in all competitions this season and there is a genuine chance of him ending as the top goalscorer in Scotland this term despite him being a right-back.

The Rangers captain has been lauded for the consistency of his performances and his output up front that has made Rangers a much more dangerous attacking unit in the ongoing campaign.

But McAvennie insisted that he is not sure that he wants the right-back to be in the centre-forward’s position and tapping in goals for his side

He pointed out that 12 of Tavernier’s 16 goals this season have been penalties and the former Bhoy insisted that he is not sure about the hype surrounding Rangers and their captain at the moment.

McAvennie said on the Celtic Huddle Podcast: “Are they that good? They are on a high as they are scoring goals.

“Look at that boy Tavernier, he was your centre-forward. He tapped a ball in, but what is he even doing there?

“He has scored 12 penalties.

“He is going to be the top goalscorer and win the golden boot with penalties.

“Don’t give me all that.

“I am not having all that.”

Tavernier has also registered eleven assists for Rangers this season and has been their best creative outlet.

He faced criticism from fans earlier in his Rangers career and question marks for some remain over his defensive abilities.
