The 23-year-old striker returned to the Chelsea starting eleven in the league on Monday night for the first time since the 0-0 draw against Tottenham towards the end of last month and made an instant impact.
He scored a brace in the final quarter of the game to seal the points for Chelsea in a 3-0 win over West Ham at Stamford Bridge.
Following two defeats on the trot, Lampard dropped Olivier Giroud back to the bench in favour of Abraham and Shearer was happy that the striker grabbed the opportunity with both hands.
The former striker said on Premier League TV: “It was a big decision and it has worked really well for Frank and for Tammy.
“When you are given the opportunity again to go in, bear in mind how big Giroud is in terms of a personality and what he has done in his career and what he can do.
“So when you are given another opportunity, you have got to go in there and make it a point.
“And there is no better way of making a point than putting the ball in the back of the net and to do it twice as he has done, for confidence-wise, it will do him a world of good.”
Chelsea will take on Giroud’s former club Arsenal next weekend but Shearer believes Lampard will have to stick with Abraham for that game as well.
He insisted that his performance on Monday night has more or less forced the Chelsea manager’s hand for the London derby at the weekend.
Shearer added: “He has to [stick with Tammy against Arsenal].
“When you are striker who has scored two, when the manager has practically begging you to do that because he has put you in and you have to go and prove a point, you can’t then leave him out in the next game when he is full of confidence.
“He will want the game tomorrow, three or four days is too long for Tammy Abraham now because of the way he is playing.”
