Bruce is under pressure at Newcastle and a fresh voice as part of his backroom staff has been identified as desirable, with the focus being on former Belgium assistant Jones.

Jones, who had a stint managing Luton Town, is currently on the books at Championship side Bournemouth, but Bruce has revealed Newcastle have now got the green light to speak to him.

He insists that bringing in a new coach to help is something the club have been considering for some time and is hopeful that Jones can make an impact.

Bruce told BBC Newcastle: “He’s been given permission to speak to us. Talks are ongoing.

“It’s something we’ve been looking at for a while now with the problems of COVID.

“Let’s hope we can get it resolved and he can come and give us a hand”, the Magpies boss added.

Newcastle are in action at home Leeds United on Tuesday night and Bruce will hope his side can grab a morale-boosting win.

They suffered a 5-2 crushing away at Leeds in December and head into the St James’ Park clash not having won at home in their last three outings.
