Bamford’s name was missing from the list when Gareth Southgate named his England squad on Thursday for the upcoming internationals.
The 27-year-old striker has scored 13 Premier League goals this season but the England boss opted for Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins over Bamford and admitted that the Leeds star was unfortunate to not make the cut.
Allen is aware of Bamford’s record this season for Leeds but believes that he is still too inconsistent and needs a lot of chances to score goals.
He insisted that at international level England need forwards who are a bit more consistent when it comes to converting chances than Bamford.
The former Three Lions star said on talkSPORT: “The one thing about Patrick Bamford is that he has been outstanding for Leeds.
“[But] I am not sure he is the consistent goalscorer to play at international level. He needs a lot of chances to score goals.
“In a Leeds team where he has been given a lot of chances, he has scored.
“But I just think there are other players at international level who perhaps could be a little more consistent goalscoring wise.”
Bamford represented England at Under-21 level but his wait for a senior call-up will have to continue.
