With first choice striker Patrick Bamford sidelined with injury, Rodrigo was deployed in the number 9 role, while winger James was played out of position behind him in their 1-1 Premier League draw against Wolves.

However, the Whites new boy struggled to make any significant impact in his new role and returned to the right wing on Tuesday in Leeds’ 2-0 EFL Cup loss to Arsenal.

Leeds legend Dorigo feels playing James through the middle was a surprise move by Bielsa, although it did ended up being an experiment that did not really work.

Dorigo is not expecting Bielsa to play James centrally again when they take on Norwich on Sunday at Carrow Road, which in his eyes is a must win game for the Whites.

“But there was no doubt that having James through the middle was a surprise and it was probably an experiment that didn’t really work”, Dorigo wrote in his Yorkshire Evening Post column.

“I can’t imagine we will see that again at Norwich on Sunday, which you could argue is must-win, even if it seems silly to say it so early on in the season.”

“We know where our fight is and it’s in that bottom half.

“We have to beat teams who are lower down.”

Leeds go into Sunday’s clash looking for their second top flight win this season while their hosts are struggling at the bottom of the league, winless in their nine outings.
