The Toffees sacked Rafael Benitez over the weekend, just seven months after his controversial appointment at Goodison Park.

Benitez was under pressure due to declining results but a 2-1 defeat at Norwich City on Saturday was the death knell on his time as Everton manager.

The Toffees are keen to make a swift appointment and have already contacted the Belgian FA to seek permission to hold talks with Roberto Martinez.

Everton do not want a dragged out search for a new manager and want to make the appointment before Villa visit Goodison Park on Saturday.

Martinez is the top target and the Spaniard is believed to be interested in a second stint as Everton manager.

But Belgium do not want to lose their manager just ten months before the World Cup and are trying to convince him to stay.

Former Borussia Dortmund boss Lucien Favre is also in the running to become the next Everton boss.

Wayne Rooney’s work at Derby County has also been noticed but until Monday evening, there was no contact between him and Everton.
