Ashworth is set to take up the role at St James’ Park after departing Brighton & Hove Albion and faces a big summer window ahead.

Newcastle splashed over £90m on new players in the January transfer window to give their hopes of survival in the Premier League a shot in the arm.

The Magpies are also expected to spend heavily in the summer transfer window and Ashworth is already looking towards the start of business.

He is focusing on potential transfers and targets to get the club ready for the start of next season.

Newcastle will hope to still be a Premier League side next term and have made good progress towards doing so under Eddie Howe.

They are now outside the Premier League drop zone, with a four-point cushion over Watford.

Newcastle, who drew against West Ham United on Saturday, are in action in the capital again at the weekend when they face Brentford.
